She performed live in front of a television audience of millions week in and week out on Season 10 of “American Idol,” but at the Detroit Lions/Green Bay Packers game on Thanksgiving, Lauren Alaina’s nerves got the best of her as she flubbed the National Anthem.

Unlike Christina Aguilera, who, at last year’s Super Bowl actually sang the wrong lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but kept singing, on Thursday, Lauren completely went silent for about five seconds in the middle of the song.

“What so proudly we hailed, through the twi…” she trailed off into silence.

Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin Malone on NBC comedy “The Office,” was one of the many fans who caught Lauren’s singing snafu and Tweeted about it, quickly propelling her name into a top 10 Twitter trending topic.

“Oh Lauren Alaina… Poor you. Poor poor you….” he wrote.

Lauren was able to jump back in on the line, “Whose broad stripes and bright stars…” and, with a smile on her face, finished to the delight of the patrons in the sold-out stadium, who cheered loudly.

This time, Suh — voted the dirtiest player in the league by his peers in a Sporting News poll — is likely to be out of luck. After over $40,000 in fines and a bye-week trip to NFL headquarters with his coach to get clarification on what does and does not constitute legal play, the Lions’ defensive end repeatedly palmed the head of right guard Evan Dietrich-Smith against the turf Thursday as he tried to stand up, and then stomped him after a linemen’s scrum.

Commissioner Roger Goodell will no doubt consider Suh’s history as he ponders a suspension and/or fine. He may also listen to Suh’s postgame comments, which were remarkably devoid of remorse and at odds with the images of the moment (via CBS’ Will Brinson).

Suh said he was just trying to get up and “get out of the situation.” Somehow, “situations” seem irresistibly and repeatedly drawn to him. He apologized to his teammates, coaches and “true fans for allowing the refs to have an opportunity to take me out of this game. What I did was remove myself from the situation in the best way I felt, me being held down in the situation I was in. And further, my intentions were not to kick anybody, as I did not, removing myself as you see, I’m walking away from the situation and with that I apologize to my teammates and my fans and my coaches for putting myself in the position to be misinterpreted and taken out of the game.”

Later, he said: “I understand, in this world, because of the type of player and type of person I am, all eyes are on me. So why would I do something to jeopardize myself and jeopardize my team first and foremost? So with that, that’s why — I don’t do bad things and I have no intention to hurt somebody. If I want to hurt him, I’m going to hit his quarterback. As I did throughout that game.

“I was on top of a guy being pulled down and trying to get up and get off of the ground, [that’s] why you see me pushing the helmet down, because I’m trying to remove myself from the situation. A lot of people are going to interpret it as ... or create their own story lines for seeing what they want to interpret it, but I know what I did and the Man Upstairs knows what I did.”

Suh is not without his sensitive, pensive side. He does frequent charitable work and, in an interview with the New York Times’ Judy Battista earlier this week, he expressed an intelligent awareness, and denial, over how he is perceived.

“It’s how Tom Brady is the pretty boy of the league,” Suh said. “I’m maybe the villain of the league. It used to boggle my mind: How do you get this reputation? I look at James Harrison’s situation last year. I’m him this year.”

His father, Michael, told Battista that he sees the talk about how Suh plays and adds, “I don’t want people thinking my son is this.”

Unfortunately, now they do.

And now, Suh’s coach, Jim Schwartz, has had a front-row seat to two of the NFL’s most embarrassing player stomps. He was defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans when Albert Haynesworth stomped the helmetless head of Andre Gurode, then of the Dallas Cowboys, in October 2006. Gurode needed 30 stitches to close his cuts; Haynesworth was given an unprecedented five-game suspension, was chewed out on the sidelines by then-coach Jeff Fisher — who apologized immediately afterward and promised team discipline if he felt the NFL’s was insufficient. At the time of that suspension, Goodell, only a couple of months into the job, said: “There is absolutely no place in the game, or anywhere else, for the inexcusable action.” Fisher said: “This is an unprecedented suspension, and I also feel like his actions on the field were unprecedented.”

Just as this would appear to be a defining moment for Suh, it is Schwartz’s moment as a coach and Lions’ leader, a moment he let pass Thursday. Schwartz said Suh “said he was being held in the scrum and was trying to get out of the situation” but did admit that Suh can’t indulge in anger or retaliation.

“Regardless of what our intent is, we can’t put ourselves in that position,” Schwartz said. “We can’t leave any gray area and can’t give an official any reason to make that call.”

Well, no. Schwartz, who tried to spar with Jim Harbaugh after a postgame handshake, should do some thinking, too. He’s a good, smart coach — a Georgetown alum who interviewed for the Redskins’ job — but this Suh moment has building for a while and he bears some responsibility for that.

And now he also must coach up a team that’s reeling, with losses in four of the last six games, and preparing to face the Saints in New Orleans on Dec. 4 — most likely without Ndamukong Suh.

Natalie Wood death: More witnesses speak out after case is reopened

Wood, who played Maria in the musical film "West Side Story," died at age 43 on Nov. 29, 1981 during a yacht trip near Catalina Island in California with Wagner, her then-husband, and Christopher Walken, who co-starred with her in the sci-fi thriller "Brainstorm." Her death was ruled an accidental drowning.

Marilyn Wayne told the television show "Entertainment Tonight" she was on a yacht located about 40 yards away from the one Wagner, Walken and Wood were on. She said that on the night before Wood's body was found in the water, at about 11 p.m., she heard a female voice yelling for help for about 25 minutes.

'Somebody help me - I'm drowning!' Wayne quoted the voice as saying, adding: "I went to the deck above and started calling out, 'Where are you?' It was very dark. There was no way to help unless I were to jump in and swim around blindly, which was not an option, given the temperature of the water, I probably would have frozen to death."

"Originally, I remained silent because of my feelings for the family," Wayne added. "The daughters were young and I thought it would be in very bad taste to rehash their mother's last moments on this earth. Now, the kids are grown. I did have a certain fear of saying something. I got an odd note in my mailbox ... that said just very cryptically, 'If you want to stay healthy' - I'm paraphrasing ... 'just keep your mouth shut.'"

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detective Lt. John Corina told reporters on November 18 that new information had surfaced and that investigators would re-examine the case. Wagner, 81, is not a suspect, but would be contacted about the matter, he added. He declined to say whether or not officials would speak to Walken. Both actors have not commented. Meanwhile, Roger Smith, the lifeguard captain who found Wood after her death, told the Los Angeles Times that he believed that the actress could have been saved if a search was called earlier. He said that based on the condition of her lifeless body, she "survived for sometime in the water and was blown out to sea," adding: "She probably cried for help for hours."

Wagner, known to younger audiences as the villain "Number Two" in the "Austin Powers" films, married Wood in 1957. They divorced about four years later, then remarried in 1972 and had one child, Courtney. Wood also had another daughter, Natasha, from her marriage to British producers Richard Gregson. Wagner married for the fourth time in 1990.

"We're going to re-interview some people, interview some new people and re-evaluate some of the evidence," Corina had said. "We plan to go to Hawaii and take a look at the boat. We'll end up probably talking to the captain sooner or later. We'll go where ever the investigation's going to take us."

The former captain of the yacht, Dennis Davern, told CNN that Wagner waited hours to call the Coast Guard after Wood went missing from the vessel and added that he searched the boat for her. Warner, Davern said, told him not to turn on the searchlight to see if she was in the water. The actor has not commented about his remarks.

Wood was born as Natalia Zakharenko in California. She started out as a successful child actress in films such as "Miracle on 34th Street." She later went to star in several films including the 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause" opposite James Dean and the movie adaptation of "Gypsy." She earned two Oscar nominations for "Splendor in the Grass" in 1961, the same year "West Side Story" was released, and "Love with the Proper Stranger" in 1963.

Corina said any issues regarding the timing of the investigation announcement - made days before the 30th anniversary of Wood's death, were "inconsequential" to the Sheriff's Department," adding: "We're not concerned with the anniversary date."

Special editions of the DVD and Blu-ray of "West Side Story" hit stories earlier this week, on November 15, to mark the musical film's 50th anniversary. Woods' co-stars from "West Side Story" recently had their handprints immortalized at Grauman's Chinese Theatre to mark the occasion.

"I wish Natalie were here - that would really complete the quartet," Rita Moreno, who played Wood's character's sister, said at the ceremony.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- A heart condition that likely was undiagnosed killed the University of Arkansas football player who was found unconscious in his dorm room over the weekend, a coroner said Tuesday.

Washington County coroner Roger Morris said that to the best of his knowledge, Garrett Uekman's condition, called cardiomyopathy, was not previously detected. In the condition, the heart becomes enlarged.

Uekman, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman tight end, was last seen by his roommate playing video games Sunday morning. He was found unresponsive in his dorm room an hour later and was in cardiac arrest by the time emergency services personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead shortly after noon.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long has said the university wasn't aware of any pre-existing medical condition for Uekman. A university spokesman declined comment because school officials hadn't yet seen the written report.

Uekman's toxicology report came back with no indications of improper drug use, Morris said. He said the manner of death was natural. University police have said there were no suspicious circumstances about Uekman's death.

Weekend funeral services will be held in Little Rock.

There are several types of cardiomyopathy, though it wasn't clear which type Uekman suffered from, Morris said. One kind, called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, thickens the heart and makes it harder to pump blood, and is often the culprit when young athletes suddenly collapse and die. Symptoms can include an irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath. In many cases, it goes undetected.

"This young man may have not shown any signs (being) in that great of physical shape," Morris said.

Several thousand mourners gathered in Fayetteville on Monday for a candlelight vigil to remember Uekman. His picture remained on the videoboard at the Bud Walton Arena throughout the ceremony, and those in attendance wore stickers that had black ribbons wrapped in red with a white "88" on them, in honor of Uekman's number.

Ndamukong Suh Stomp: NFL Won't Review Ejection Of Lions Player Before Next Week

DETROIT — For the first season-and-a-half of his young career, Ndamukong Suh could almost brush off talk about his penalties and fines, saying he would keep doing what was needed to help his Detroit Lions.
On Friday, Suh's team publically chastised the star defensive tackle after he was ejected during a Thanksgiving loss to Green Bay for stomping at an opposing player.
"The on-field conduct exhibited by Ndamukong Suh that led to his ejection from yesterday's game was unacceptable and failed to meet the high level of sportsmanship we expect from our players," the team said in a statement Friday night. "Ndamukong has made many positive contributions to the Lions on and off the field. We expect his behavior going forward to consistently reflect that high standard of professionalism."
It could be several days before Suh finds out the true cost of his third-quarter stomp in Detroit's 27-15 loss to the Packers on Thursday. An NFL spokesman said Friday that plays from Week 12 looked at for potential discipline won't be reviewed until all games are completed.
Detroit coach Jim Schwartz was curt after Thursday's defeat when asked if he was worried about a possible suspension.
"I'm worried about losing this game," Schwartz said.
Suh was dismissed after tangling with Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. After being pushed off Dietrich-Smith, Suh stepped down hard with his right foot, appearing to make contact with Dietrich-Smith's right arm.
Suh said he was trying to keep his balance while freeing himself from the brief scuffle. He publically apologized to teammates, coaches and fans for "allowing the refs to have an opportunity to take me out of this game," but he insisted he didn't intentionally step on anyone.
"People are going to have their own opinions – that's fine," he said. "The only (people) that I really care about are my teammates, my true fans and my coaches and their opinions, and that's where it lies. And honestly, the most important person in this whole thing that I have to deal with is the man upstairs."

In less than two seasons as a pro, Suh has established himself as one of the game's strongest and most athletic defensive linemen, but he's also received his share of fines.
Suh requested and received a meeting earlier this month with Commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss his play. He said that dialogue was helpful, but now the league will have to decide whether more discipline is merited after he was ejected on national television.
New York Jets coach Rex Ryan came up with one tongue-in-cheek solution Friday.
"I'll be honest with you, I think the young man, he should be released ... and come to the Jets," Ryan joked. "I'm just throwing that out there. I don't think he's that good of a player. I don't know about the incident and all that jazz, but we'll take him. We'll sacrifice that way."
Ryan then turned a little more serious.
"I don't even know what to say on it," Ryan said. "You've seen things like that happen on the field before. It's an emotional game."
Jets offensive lineman Matt Slauson, who played with Suh at Nebraska, sounded off on the topic Friday.
"Somebody needs to get him under control, because he's trying to hurt people," Slauson told the New York Post. "It's one thing to be an incredibly physical player and a tenacious player, but it's another thing to set out to end that guy's career."
Slauson said last year that he and Suh used to mix it up in practice while in college.
"There were times we got into fights, during spring ball, during camp, but I kind of fought everyone," Slauson said then.
In 2006, Albert Haynesworth, then with the Tennessee Titans, was suspended five games after swiping his cleats across the head of helmetless Dallas center Andre Gurode. Suh's stomp wasn't toward Dietrich-Smith's head, and the Green Bay player didn't seem too much worse for wear.
When asked afterward where Suh stepped on him, Dietrich-Smith sounded like he didn't want to stir the pot.
"I have no idea," he said. "I have to watch the tape."
If Suh is suspended early next week, he would have a chance to keep playing pending any appeal – but that appeals process can be expedited. Detroit plays at New Orleans on Dec. 4.
The NFL moved that game to prime time, a reflection of the buzz surrounding the improved Lions this season. Led by young stars Suh, Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, Detroit won its first five games, but the Lions have since lost four of six.
Defensive backs Louis Delmas, Chris Houston and Brandon McDonald went down with injuries against the Packers, and so did running back Kevin Smith. If the Lions are without Suh for an extended period, it could hurt them in the playoff race.
"He plays aggressive. All of us, sometimes, might overreact in certain situations," Detroit defensive lineman Cliff Avril said. "We've got to play real smart."

I do agree with this point

that he needs to be holding the clipboard and going over reads and scenarios with the starting QB and the coaches. That’s how he’ll get on-the-job training. But, in terms of him getting reps to see how he does, I don’t think that has any effect on whether we should draft a QB high or not. Hear me out. In a blowout game, they’re going to be playing zone and he’ll probably get a lot of yards. It will be an inaccurate assessment of his abilities. If his play is mediocre or bad, we can chalk it up to inexperience. In either scenario, we should still draft a QB high…why wouldn’t we? Now, if he starts a game against a tough opponent and dominates, our draft strategy could be affected. But, we’re not going to start him unless Palko and Orton both get hurt. Besides, the chances that he could or would do that are minimal. As soon as we drafted Orton, I knew it was the end of Stanzi’s bid to make a start this year. And, it’s not a terrible thing for him. He’ll have an entire offseason to get ready to compete in next year’s training camp. We will still see what he can do. The main point I’m trying to make, though, is that our draft strategy for 2012 should not be affected.

I think the best story I ever wrote was 'The Ship Who Sang'. It still causes people to cry, including me. When Todd and I were reading it at Brighton, they had a BBC crew filming it. So there were these BBC cameramen hunkered down filming us, and comes the end of the story (which Todd always reads, because I can't go through it without weeping), I saw that these cameramen had tears rolling down their faces. That's such a thrill — a story I wrote at the beginning of my career, and it's still packin' the house. I wrote that story because I couldn't tell my father, he died in 1953. I remember reading a story — I can't remember the name or that of the author — about a woman searching for her son's brain, it had been used for an autopilot on an ore ship and she wanted to find it and give it surcease. And I thought what if severely disabled people were given a chance to become starships? What if they wanted to do that? I thought, 'Hey, that would be a gorgeous idea.' So that's how 'The Ship Who Sang' was born.

McCaffrey's first novel, Restoree, was written in response to the unrealistic depiction of women in science fiction and fantasy.

But it was the many Pern novels that sealed her renown. One of my fondest convention memories is of going to Dragon*Con one year and attending a panel about "Emergency Medicine on Pern." There, a group of extremely earnest — but good-humored — people were hashing out exactly what you would do if someone happened to be on Pern and fell of his/her dragon. How would you make a stretcher out of items that were readily available on Pern? How would you keep the fallen rider's dragon from freaking out? And so on. The world of Pern was as real to these people as Atlanta — maybe more so.

Despite the agony and his disfigurement, Martinez decided to show burn victims that they can proudly bear their scars.

"He would visit other soldiers, other patients. He wasn't afraid to talk about what happened," Maj. David Admire, an occupational therapist at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital told the Leaf Chronicle. "He wasn’t afraid to show his face, which was huge."

WGN WEATHER, There are reports of forecast for Chicago that a major windstorm can hit the Chicago. Northerly winds will ramp up in the range 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts Tuesday night continues until Wednesday. Considerable blowing snow is expected with near blizzard conditions possible.
Hang on, Heights and Olympia Fields residents: a large winter storm is headed your way.
The National Weather Service issued a snowstorm watch for much of northern Illinois, including Cook County, beginning Tuesday afternoon. According to counsel, the storm could bring up to 18 inches of snow or more in some areas and wind gusts up to 40 mph could create blizzard conditions and whiteout.
The first phase of the storm will begin on Monday afternoon, bringing two to four inches of snow by Tuesday morning. The highest snowfall is expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue until Wednesday afternoon.
According to counsel, the total accumulation of the storm are expected to more than a foot in northern Illinois and beyond 18 inches on the north and east central Illinois.
The National Weather Service warns motorists of “almost impossible travel conditions” Tuesday afternoon and evening due to the rapid accumulation of snow, blizzard should call a “dangerous snowstorm, multifaceted and potentially lethal.”

If you’ve been following the news coming out of Egypt the past few days, you know that Internet access in the protest-filled nation has been severely limited. As of today, according to Computerworld, “Egypt is now off the grid.” They write, “Four days after the Egyptian government ordered Internet service providers to disconnect from the Internet, the country’s last working Internet company has abruptly vanished from cyberspace.”

Here in the U.S., there’s a piece of legislation on the table, drafted by Senators Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins, that would offer President Obama a “kill switch,” effectively allowing him to shut down the Internet during a national emergency. Brandon Milhorn, counsel for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, says, ”We’re not trying to mandate any requirements for the entire Internet, the entire Internet backbone… (just the) crucial components that form our nation’s critical infrastructure.” Meaning, theoretically, that websites like Twitter would still be accessible – you know, should there be an uprising over the constitutionality of healthcare reform, let’s say.

Twitter is currently blocked in Egypt, even via text and Twitter mobile. But “thanks to some philanthropic engineers at Twitter, Google, and SayNow (a company Google recently acquired), Egyptians can dial a free number and leave a voicemail that will automatically tweet out,” Business Insider reports. As I’ve been watching the events in Egypt unfold nightly on CNN, I keep thinking how incredible it is that we live in such an era of global communication, but how frightening it must be for those living here and around the world trying to keep tabs on their relatives in Egypt. As CBS notes in their piece about the Lieberman-Collins bill, “Civil libertarians and some industry representatives have repeatedly raised concerns about the various proposals to give the executive branch such broad emergency power,” and I can’t help but feel similarly, especially since “the revised version includes new language saying that the federal government’s designation of vital Internet or other computer systems shall not be subject to judicial review.” It’s one thing to aim to protect national security and another to try to deny citizens access to communication tools in times of crisis.

FDA Says There are "No simple solutions" to Speed Up Its Regulatory Guidance Process

In a reported issued last week by FDA's Transparency Task Force (see "19 steps FDA is taking to improve its transparency to regulated industry") the FDA took note of several comments it received stating that the timeliness of its regulatory guidance process must be improved; comments such as: “the process moves too slowly to provide meaningful information to industry."

In response, the Task Force report says that "there are no simple solutions to such problems":

"In part because of competing, sometimes higher-priority [my emphasis], demands on agency staff, there are no simple solutions to such problems as lack of predictability about when a guidance document will issue. For example, if application review, regulation development and crisis management are all given a higher priority than guidance development, and the same staff are responsible for all of these activities, it may be impossible to predict when guidance documents will be completed. In addition, many of the problems, such as timeliness, cannot be addressed solely by greater transparency."

Timeliness of issuing FDA guidance was top of mind in 2010 for the many pharma marketers who waited for social media/internet draft guidance that the FDA hoped would be released before the end of 2010. That did not happen (see the 2010 Pharma Marketing Yearbook for a review) and many of us were left wondering why -- especially when it seemed likely that the FDA would take more manageable "baby steps" and issue multiple guidances on specific issues such as space limitations in social media and search engine advertising (see "FDA Social Media Guidelines Best Done in Baby Steps" and "I Predicted It: Social Media Guidance Likely To Be Split Into Multiple Documents").

In response to the criticism, the FDA's Task Force suggested the following ACTION STEP:
ACTION 11:
To examine suggestions for improving the guidance process, the Commissioner has formed a cross-agency working group under the leadership of the Office of Policy. This working group is examining the current process and will identify best practices for improving the agency’s work on guidance. Topics include streamlining guidance development, reducing the time between issuance of draft and final guidance, and making it easier to find guidance documents on the FDA Web site.
With regard to the implementation of this "ACTION STEP," the Task Force said: "The working group will summarize their review of the guidance development process and make recommendations, as appropriate, by the end of FY 2011."

These recommendations, however, will not likely have any impact on current guidances currently working their way through FDA's sausage making -- er, I mean guidance development -- process.

In order to provide "more predictability and clarity" with respect to the guidance development process, the FDA "will inform industry about the progress of certain high priority guidances [my emphasis] in development by disclosing a timeline from the start of the agency’s work on a draft guidance to publication of the final guidance."

What does FDA consider to be "high priority guidances?" In a footnote, the Task Force defines it this way: "A certain guidance document may be considered 'high priority' if the content in the planned guidance would benefit public health (e.g., responds to a public health risk or provides information about clinical study design), is required by statute, would improve agency operations, or is included as part of user fee negotiations."

Whether or not social media guidance is high priority is up for debate. Many pharmaceutical companies, however, suggested that lack of guidance for drug promotion via the Internet and social media adversely affects public health because of the mis-information about products proliferating throughout the Internet.

Whatever the merits of the public health argument, it appears that the drug industry can MAKE the issuance of social media guidelines a "high priority" by PAYING for it (ie, include it "as part of user fee negotiations"). Is it possible that the FDA is blackmailing the drug industry into paying more user fees before it issues social media guidance?

The drug industry, however, may not really be interested in speeding up the process. For one thing, it (ie, PFIZER/WLF) is challenging the FDA's constitutional right to issue social media guidance/rules (see "WLF & Pfizer Ask Court to Block FDA Guidance on Social Media").

The 10 Most Important, Awesome Pharma Marketing Highlights of 2010

The 2010 edition of the Pharma Marketing Yearbook™ is a commemorative record of pharmaceutical marketing issues and highlights of the past year as seen through my eyes and the eyes of my "network" of readers, subscribers, colleagues and followers. It has all been documented here on this blog, which after all is meant to be a log of such things.

I've been told that people like lists, so here's my list of the 10 Most Important, Awesome Pharma Marketing Highlights of 2010. I invite you to suggest your own list in comments to this post. There's space reserved in the Yearbook -- which will be updated periodically -- for your list. I also invite you to "sign" the Yearbook and become part of record.

Awesome Highlight #1: I was quoted in TIME magazine!

Dude! That was awesome for me, but maybe not so much for you.

Awesome Highlight #2: FDA did NOT issue any social media guidance for the drug industry in 2010

Bummer! That's got to be an important event even though it was a NON-event! Some people are giving up on the whole thing and saying "damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!" Well, maybe not using those words. My Twitter pal Jonathan Richman -- who also loves lists -- says he is "more than a bit tired of hearing about 'the guidelines'" and is "Ready, Willing, and Legal" to proceed with pharma social media "marketing" without guidelines. In fact, he says "not a single industry program on [his wiki] list has ever received a Warning Letter or Notice of Violation from the FDA. Someone is doing something and not getting into any trouble." Novartis's Tasigna branded "Facebook Share" social media widget may not be on Jon's list, BUT Novartis DID get a warning letter from the FDA regarding that piece of marketing (follow the links in this post: "Update on FDA Regulation of Pharma Metadata & Impact on Search"). Come to think of it, THAT letter should have been included as a standalone AWESOME highlight of 2010, but I'm content to leave it as part of #2.

Awesome Highlight #3: The Hawaiian Shirt Off Pharmaguy’s Back!

Congrats! Alex Butler gets the first-ever Pharmaguy Social Media Pioneering Award in recognition of his pioneering efforts. Truly a nice guy! And this proves that I am on the same page as Jon about the possibility of being "legal" without guidelines. However, it takes an extraordinary person like Butler and his team at Janssen to do it without guidelines. Guidelines are for those idiots out there who insist on pushing the envelope and altering the playing field to their advantage. Just imagine a football game without sidelines!

Here's just a bit of Alex's comment he made in the Yearbook:
"Thanks for your work in 2010 John. Obviously a very personal highlight for me was receiving the Pharmaguy pioneer award, especially considering the fantastic list of people I had the honour to rub shoulders with on the nomination list. ... For me though we are in danger of heading down the wrong road. Many companies are trying to do the right thing with the wrong people. ... This is about communication- a fundamental change to the way we communicate about our business and our products, not about platforms. We need people with expertise in communications and in the positive sense, new marketing, to lead the cultural shift necessary within our industry."

Awesome Highlight #4: Sanofi-Aventis Meets the Disgruntled Patient

And it wasn't pretty! Yes, it's possible for the pharmaceutical industry to do social media without FDA guidelines, but that doesn't mean that they will do it right. A case in point is the experience that sanofi-aventis had with Shirley Ledlie, who I labeled a "disgruntled patient" because she overwhelmed S-A's Facebook page with images of her bald head. You can read all about this by following the links in the 2010 Pharma Marketing Yearbook, which Shirley signed:
"As I was the 'Disgruntled Patient' feel proud that I managed to closed down the FB page of Sanofi Aventis. Although it reopened it no longer accepts comments from the public. This only goes to prove a point- only SA cant see that! Thank you John for including this episode in your Year Book 2010."
Awesome Highlight #5: The Adventures of Social Media Intern

Speaking of Social Media Faux Pas! Social Media Intern made the scene in 2010. "I enjoy changing the course of social networks, fixing an errant Facebook page faster than a speeding bullet, and jumping over the highest hurdles of any pharma legal/regulatory department," says Social Media Intern. "As an intern I do not make much money. My job is to find pharma social media 'dummies' who launch social media campaigns without thinking!"

Awesome Highlight #6: Dark, Secret, and Fake Patients on the Internet

FDA Guidelines are irrelevant here! In 2010, we learned about "dark" networks that are not open to pharma marketers. You can read all about this by following the links in the 2010 Pharma Marketing Yearbook.

Awesome Highlight #7: I Learned How to “Pronounce Boehringer Ingelheim!

Say it! Funny story... I had to edit the podcast "Scientist Vs salesman: Which approach will enable your sales reps to raise their value to the industry?" to make sure we were saying it correctly! If only I had the rebus to help me -- for more on that, refer to the 2010 Pharma Marketing Yearbook.

Awesome Highlight #8: Digital Pharma Idiot Savants Discovered

Who knew?! A pharma company can be both a feeble-minded digital idiot and a digital genius at the same time!

Awesome Highlight #9: Pharma Payments to Physicians

Whoa boy! 2010 was the year the dirt came out about physicians, medical schools, and advocacy groups who received payments from pharmaceutical companies. So far, disclosures have not been entirely transparent -- more like translucent. Maybe the pharma industry will lobby Congress in 2011 to eliminate the part of the Health Reform law that requires ALL pharma companies to reveal such payments.

Awesome Highlight #10: Pharma Companies Behaving Badly

So what else is new?! 2010 was the year that Johnson & Johnson fell off its much ballyhooed pedestal. I was particularly dismayed that the CEO sent an unprepared underling to face the music before a Congressional Committee! Not a good precedent for women pharma executives when one of their own is hung out to dry like that.

“All the talent in the world is not going to help anybody if they don’t put the work in,” explained Pat Manocchia, noting that one who finds success is “religiously consistent and he works hard.”

Of course, Manocchia also notes that having a top-notch gym helps as well.

“I take pretty good care of myself. And fortunately I’m in a facility where I’m able to do that,” said Manocchia, referring to the La Palestra Center for Preventative Medicine, where he trains clients.

Of course, Manocchia does accept that people – even celebrities – are human. Although consistency is crucial, you don’t have to be supremely strict all the time.

“I’m not going to crucify somebody for having a Big Mac – you can’t eat perfectly every single meal,” said Manocchia. “The objective is to do the best you can and make smart choices. And don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make a smart choice.”

And it’s this grounded approach that has big names such as John McEnroe, Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson and even John F. Kennedy, Jr. choosing Manocchia.

Although Manocchia leaves most of the details to the pages of Anatomy of Exercise: A Trainer’s Inside Guide to Your Workout, he did offer some advice for everyone out there.

“Variety is the key,” Manocchia explains. “Without doing that, your body stagnates very quickly.”

The Jewish festival of Hanukkah has never actually been explicitly mentioned in canon, filmed Star Trek. While Alan Dean Foster’s novelization of the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode “The Ambergris Element” included a mention of the feline Caitian crewmember M’Ress playing a game of draydel (a traditional spinning top game played during Hanukkah) with her Academy roommate, it did not appear in the filmed version. However, many of Trek’s luminaries are Jewish, including J.J. Abrams, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy (who tweeted Hanukkah wishes today). In fact the original Kirk and Spock are called out in Adam Sandler’s famous "The Chanukah Song". Last year Neil Diamond made his own cover of this song, and the animated video shows Kirk and Spock playing with a draydel.

Hannukah 2010 in NYC (Sephardic Music Festival, Matisyahu, YLT, dreidel tournaments, klezmer, burlesque & more)

Hanukkah is here and that means lots of Chanukah themed NYC events. Most notably, 8 nights of Yo La Tengo and guests, but most spiritually, the Sephardic Music Festival which kicks off tonight (12/1), the first night of Hanukkah, and runs through the end.

Tonight's Sephardic show features music by Diwon, DeScribe, Y-Love and more in addition to an art gallery and fashion show at IndustryCityNYC. On December 2, Pharaoh's Daughter and Soulfarm play 92Y Tribeca. Soulfarm also plays CVLT Studios on December 4 with Diwon (and a non Hanukkah holiday show at Highline Ballroom on 12/23 with Moshav and Kosha Dillz). On December 6, the Sephardic Scholar Series is presenting Voices from Across the Strait with Vanessa Paloma & d'Safi Takht Ensemble at the Center for Jewish History. A Freedom of Information Act request filed by former Congressman Bob Barr seeks to discover whether the Department of Homeland Security has been keeping tabs on the Drudge Report and other prominent media outlets who have spearheaded a nationwide revolt against invasive TSA airport security measures.

The FOIA request, filed by Barr’s Liberty Guard organization (PDF here), demands that the Transportation Security Administration, an agency of the DHS, turn over all information related to “Matt Drudge,” “drudgereport.com,” along with other media personalities and websites that have been at the center of the TSA controversy, including “Alex Jones, “John Tyner” and “prisonplanet.com”.

The request seeks to ascertain whether any of these names have been linked with the term “domestic extremist,” in reference to a reported TSA memo that was leaked last week which, according to Doug Hagmann, “officially addresses those who are opposed to, or engaged in the disruption of the implementation of the enhanced airport screening procedures as ‘domestic extremists’.”

Numerous confirmed memos originating out of federal or state law enforcement agencies, such as the infamous MIAC report, have listed conservatives and libertarians as “domestic extremists” and even potential domestic terrorists for opposing big government and supporting Constitutionally-minded campaigns and causes.

Google Evil? Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler Says Yes Due to Plug-In Installation

Is Google evil? That’s a question some have asked in conjunction with Google’s relentless pursuit of data, but now Asa Dotzler of Mozilla is suggesting Google is evil due to the company’s sneaky plug-in behavior. In a recent blog post, Asa Dotzler claimed Google secretly installs Google Update plug-ins into Firefox without the user’s knowledge.

“What makes Google think it’s reasonable behavior for them to slip a Google Update plug-in into Firefox when I installed Google Earth or Google Chrome (not sure which one caused this) without asking me first?” Dotzler wrote. “This is not OK behavior.”

Unfortunately, the search giant’s behavior isn’t unique; Dotzler called out a few of Google’s evil peers as well.

“When I installed iTunes, in order to manage my music collection and sync to my iPod, why did Apple think it was OK to add the iTunes Application Detector plug-in to my Firefox web browser without asking me?” Dotzler asked.
“In my book, that fits the definition of a trojan horse. Yes, that is precisely how a trojan horse operates,” explained Dotzler. “These additional pieces of software installed without my consent may not be malicious but the means by which they were installed was sneaky, underhanded, and wrong.”

most people have heard that the fine people of butterball offer a toll-free number dolling out turkey advice. here, in honor of this grand day, and the turkey i will masterfully carve for the 12 adults and 3 little ones who will feast in our home today, are some of the actual questions and responses from that help line:

* Should I remove the plastic wrap before I cook my turkey?
Yes.

* I don’t want to touch the giblets. Can I fish them out with a coat hanger?
Yes.

* Can I poke holes all over the turkey and pour a can of beer over it to keep it moist?
You’ll do more harm than good- the skin keeps the moisture in. Poking holes in it will dry it out.

* Can you thaw a frozen turkey using an electric hair dryer? Or by wrapping it in an electric blanket? In the aquarium with my tropical fish? In the tub while the kids are having their bath?
No, no, no, and no. If you’re in a hurry, thaw the turkey in the kitchen sink by immersing it in cold water. Allow half an hour per pound, and change the water every half hour.

* How can I thaw 12 turkeys all at once?
The caller was cooking for a firehouse, so Butterball advised them to put them all in a clean trash can and hose them down with a firehose.

* The family dog bit off a big piece of the turkey. Can the rest of it be saved?
Maybe. If the damage is localized, cut away the dog-eaten part of the bird and serve the rest. Disguise the maimed bird with garnishes, or carve it up out of view of your guests and serve the slices. The less your guests know, the better.

* The family dog is inside the turkey and can’t get out.
A few years back, Butterball really did get a call from the owner of a chihuahua that climbed inside the raw bird while the owner’s back was turned. The opening was big enough for the dog to get in, but not big enough for it to get back out. The turkey expert instructed the owner on how to enlarge the opening without injuring the dog. (No word on whether the bird was eaten.) Butterball has also fielded calls from owners of gerbils and housecats. “I was told not to talk about that,” one Talk-line staffer told a reporter in 1997.

* I need to drive two hours with my frozen turkey before I cook it. Will it stay frozen if I tie it to the luggage rack on the roof of my car?
The caller was from Minnesota, so the answer was yes. If you live in Florida, Arizona, or Hawaii, the answer is no.

* I’m a truck driver. Can I cook the turkey on the engine block of my semi while I’m driving? If I drive faster, will it cook faster?
There’ve been cases in wartime where soldiers cooked turkeys using the heat of Jeep engines, but Butterball gives no advice on the subject.

* I scrubbed my raw turkey with a toothbrush dipped in bleach for three hours. Is that enough to kill the harmful bacteria?
The heat of the oven is what kills the bacteria; scrubbing the turkey with bleach makes it inedible. (In extreme cases like these, or anytime the Talk-line staffers fear the bird has become unsafe to eat, they advise the cook to discard the bird, eat out, and try again next year. If the caller can’t imagine Thanksgiving without turkey, they can get some turkey hot dogs.)

* I don’t want to cook the whole turkey, so I cut it in half with a chainsaw. How do I get the chainsaw oil out of the turkey?
Toss the turkey and go get some hot dogs.

* The turkey in my freezer is 23 years old. Is it safe to eat?
Butterball advised the caller that the bird was safe to eat, but that it probably wouldn’t taste very good. “That’s what we thought,” the caller told the Talk-line. “We’ll give it to the church.”

Oprah reveals 2012 VW Beetle silhouette, gives cars to entire audience [w/video]

After dominating the afternoon talk show circuit for 25 years, Oprah Winfrey is going out in style by giving each member of her studio audience keys to the as-yet-unseen 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. The promotion is part of Oprah's Ultimate Favorite Things giveaway, in which audience members are lavished with pricey surprise gifts of all descriptions.

Jonathan Browning, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, confirmed that Winfrey reached out to the German automaker about the giveaway, saying that as an owner of the current VW New Beetle, the icon has long been one of her Favorite Things. The show, which aired moments ago on ABC, saw Oprah making the surprise announcement in front of a silhouette of the forthcoming model, and a current model New Beetle was featured on stage. While Browning admits that Oprah has been given a sneak peek at the completed car, her 275 lucky audience members will be in the dark about their new rides look until VW reveals it at a date to be determined this Spring (read: it won't be shown at the Detroit Auto Show in January). Audience members will receive their cars next Fall when VW's Puebla, Mexico plant begins production.

While VW officials declined to talk in detail about the 2012 Beetle, Browning did confirm that the new model will feature technologies like Bluetooth integration and a touchscreen, along with branded audio systems and ambient lighting. More importantly, Browning insists that the new model will have a decidedly sportier bent than previous iterations. The 2012 Beetle will feature available performance-minded items like a stiffer suspension, sport seats, 19-inch wheels and dual exhausts.

This more sporting attitude is interesting, in part because VW officials have previously indicated that they hope to 'degender' the new model (the New Beetle's image and ownership base has long skewed heavily female). Given this positioning, the decision to launch a major promotion with Oprah Winfrey may seem a bit curious, but VW knows that it will still need to woo the current New Beetle's core audience in order for the 2012 model to be a success.

Autoblog was able to confirm that not only will VW's TDI engines figure in to the model's plans, clean diesel technology will even be available in the Cabriolet model, making it the first modern oil-burning convertible sold in the States. The company's venerable 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine will also be available, but there's no word yet about a dedicated high-performance model or a possible hybrid variant.

This is not the first time Oprah has given away new cars as part of her Favorite Things show – she famously handed over the keys to 276 then-new Pontiac G6 sedans back in 2004 as part of a $7.7M promotion. Nor is it the first time that the talk show queen has worked with Volkswagen – last year she gave away a pair of Routan minivans. Have you come across someone asking you to pay a fee in advance against a guarantee of getting you a loan? Almost everyone comes across these guys once. They offer “Advance-Fee Loans” – mostly fraudulent – as compared to the authentic lenders generally owned and managed by genuine professionals.

How do you Identify Advance-Fee Loan Scam(s)?

You are always attracted by advertisements that guarantee loans or credit cards, regardless of your credit history. Few things to look out for in these advertisements that could be fraud:

Generally appear in the classified section of newspapers, magazine and on internet May also appear in radio advertisements, on local cable stations, and in flyers circulated in neighborhoods, shopping centers and at military bases. Asks for a minimal charge (approx 0) for a guaranteed loan Has a contact number given for your reference Delivery systems include services other than USPS

Unfortunately, advertising in recognized media outlets or on the Internet does not guarantee the legitimacy of the company behind the ad.

Advance fee loan scammers primarily target those who have been turned down from a banks loan or denied a credit card due to their poor credit history, or those in immediate need of money for emergencies. They ask to pay fees in advance for loan or credit cards. As mentioned above, the fee may range from 0 to several hundred dollars. And once they get your money, they disappear!

What should you do?

Irrespective of you being may be a civilian, army personnel, military personnel or a retired person, report the advance-fee loan scam offered to you to your local consumer protection agency or state Attorney General. You could alsocontact local Better Business Bureau (BBB) or Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report about the company offering you such scams.

Finding Low-Cost Help for Credit Problems

The first thing advisable in case of credit issues is to try and solve your credit problem with your creditor directly – if and when you are not in the condition to make payment. If that does not help, try contacting nearby credit counseling services. Universities, military bases, credit unions, and housing authorities may also offer low or no-cost credit counseling programs. For navy, army and military personnel, there are dedicated military lending companies that help with army military loans. There are also genuine private lenders who do not ask for anything (advance-fees) to provide such loans.

Wrigley Field Football: Game Is Technically Against NCAA Rules (Again), Thanks To Static End Zones

For Saturday's Northwestern-Illinois game at Wrigley Field, one of the end zones will back up flush against the right-field wall. On Friday, someone finally realized that this is in violation of NCAA rules, as six feet of space is required outside of the back of the end zone. As a result, the decision was made that Northwestern and Illinois will not switch sides at halftime.

The problem is that this, too, apparently violates NCAA rules. An intrepid commenter over Every Day Should Be Saturday, 4.0 Point Stance, explains:

I hope Northwestern is ok playing a game that doesn’t count. The Big Ten’s proposed rule chages clearly violate the NCAA rulebook.

Rule 3-1-2 states that “Between the first and second periods and also between the third and fourth periods, the teams shall defend opposite goal lines.” (p. FR-63).

Fine, but the teams agreed to waive that rule by mutual consent. Except the rulebook also states which rules may be waived (for instance, halftime is 20 minutes, but teams can agree to a different time). “Some administrative rules (as indicated) may be altered by the mutual consent of the competing institutions. Others (as indicated) are unalterable. No conduct rule may be changed by mutual consent.” (p. FR-16).

There is a list at pages FR-16 and 17 of those rules which may be waived, and any rule not listed is unalterable even by mutual consent. Rule 3-1-2, needless to say, is not listed as alterable. It is therefore a “conduct rule” and cannot be waived.

If the NCAA were to actually enforce its rulebook literally, this game would not count. Will they have the guts to do that? Certainly not. But the lawyer in me demands strict enforcement of the letter of the law.

Huge propers for digging this up. Of course, it's extremely unlikely that the NCAA would enforce this to the letter of the law and void the result of the game, but to recap the funny fallout:

- Northwestern and Illinois agree to play at Wrigley Field. The teams have two years to plan.
- During these two years, apparently nobody in a position of authority realizes that the dimensions are in violations of field regulations.
- The day before the game, they attempt to rectify this by not switching end zones at halftime. This brings up another violation of NCAA rules.

Why Wrigley Field Is Hosting A Northwestern Football Game

Since 1995, only Ohio State, and Michigan have more Big Ten football championships than Northwestern.

So when he assumed his role as athletic director in April 2008, Jim Phillips was shocked by the lack of interest in Wildcat football.

After all, despite playing just nine miles from the center of the second-biggest media market in America, the team couldn't consistently draw enough fans to fill its 47,000-seat stadium. Meanwhile, Penn State – winners of one fewer Big Ten title than the 'Cats – fill their 107,000-seat stadium without batting an eye.

Worse, when Ryan Field does sell out, it's usually because Iowa fans decided to make the trip to watch their boys face Northwestern.

Phillips felt Northwestern deserved that kind of support, too. He was hired for his marketing prowess, and immediately took it upon himself to leverage the school's proximity to Chicago into more fans.

"If you look at the Big Ten institutions, NU has the X factor: Chicago. Nobody else has a city like Chicago in their backyard. A lot of college fans don't have an affiliation in the area, and that's the group we want to target."

And that's when the seed for a Northwestern game in Wrigley was planted. Less than two years later it was solidified.

In the meantime, Northwestern has won eight games for two consecutive seasons, and made a New Year's Day Bowl appearance last January. Phillips is betting that this game – despite the endzone mess – will lift the program to new heights. And so far, he's right.

ESPN College Gameday is coming to Evanston for the first time since 1995, and the game has monopolized headlines in the college sports media. So Chicago is officially listening – now the 'Cats just needs to show them they're worth following on the field.

Hitt is right. We are in Will Rogers' party now who famously said "I belong to no organized party. I am a democrat."

Now is the time to think about why we didn't control our own message. We didn't. Any time the democrats got slammed, we basically went inside the house and made a steeping cup of tea. As Charles Robert Bone says this morning in an interview with Clint Brewer, "What does the Tennessee democratic party stand for?" I will admit that even I got so used to dealing with bluedogs that when I saw them put down, I was a bit shocked.

But, we didn't have a cohesive message. We didn't even promote what the democrats did well. (I add myself into this equation, so don't be too hard on me.I own it.)

The thing is we didn't, or weren't allowed, to push back, but when we decide to push back, we need a message that is consistent and doesn't go to the easy answers of just "blaming" Barack Obama because he won in 2008 or that old "he said/she said" thing that isn't productive in the least. We had our asses handed to us. We need to learn from it. We also, in this state, had our hineys handed to us in '08 but we haven't been talking about that much.

We didn't learn from that one.

Let's take a look at what messages we could be sending and controlling. (Subliminal note: control the message).

* Let's talk about that change really never originates in Washington. The message comes from outside and the tea party capitalized on this. This isn't going to be easy to do, as we have to have, once again, a message that will have to be built and constructed quickly. If you don't have endless patience, you will be disappointed. It took us a decade to get here and it's going to take time to get out of it. Al Gore in 2000, anybody. (No, I don't want to talk about how the election was stolen from him. It's history now.)
* Movements take time but they need participation outside our comfort zones. If you are urban, try to understand the rural and the rural needs to understand the urban, and so on and so on. The democratic party, during difficult times, has been the voice of the poor and forgotten in every setting. Let's remember that.
* Realize a conversation is more important than our differences. We cannot marginalize each other. Let's talk about things.
* We aren't really that lost in the wilderness. We just need to get a damned compass that works.
* Why aren't we talking about the great stuff in the health care bill instead of talking about what's wrong with it or backing away from it altogether?
* Why aren't we talking about that the economic stimulus package put people back to work? Or that the former administration had stimulus packages out there too. The private sector has put people back to work as well. It's not fixed, but it's moving like a slow river. But, it's moving.
* Karl Rove gets it. No, I didn't throw up typing that but you really need to familiarize yourself with his third party group, American Crossroads when it comes to using technology. The GOP, the Tea Party and AC don't have the market on this. As Dems, we need to be watching this as we move on into the 2012.
* We are being redistricted. That's something we can't do anything about at this point, but we can make people aware that it does impact them. It doesn't matter to the average bear though. This is strongly a politico issue that doesn't resonate with the majority of voters.

We need to figure out what the first step is and take it. And we need to start now.

The 2010 Dallas Cowboys know a thing or two about boneheaded penalties and crucial mistakes. It cost them a few games early in the season and could ultimately be a big reason why they miss out on the NFL playoffs.

On Thursday night, two teams — the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears — are trying to make their case as playoff contenders. The Dolphins are two games out of first place and trying to stay in the thick of the wild card race, while Chicago is looking to secure first place in the NFC North.

Miami is channeling their inner Cowboys and Plaxico Burress and shooting themselves in the foot — yes, I know Burress shot himself in the leg. Anyways, after picking up a big first down Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall threw the ball at his former teammate Jay Cutler. The idiotic move resulted in a 15-yard penalty. (On a positive note for Dolphins fans: This was the best looking throw by a Miami player all night)

These are the kind of moves that have haunted Marshall throughout his career. He is extremely talented, but a complete bonehead. There is is a reason people compare him to T.O.

Miami is trailing Chicago 6-0 at the half in a game that no one appears to want to stay on offense. If the Dolphins are to pick up a win at home, they’ll need to stop the turnovers and stupid penalties.

Remember the good old days of "Good Rex, Bad Rex?" One week, Bears fans would be jumping for joy, and the next, screaming bloody murder. The 2010 season has seen two sides of the Jay Cutler/ Mike Martz offense as well; the Good Offense that clicks and makes adjustments and executes, and the Bad Offense that can implode and make us look like a bunch of amateurs on the field.

Luckily, we seem to be hitting somewhat of a stride offensively, and for the Bears to be serious contenders in the NFC this year, they need to maintain the Good Offense status from here on out. Maybe Martz, Tice, and Cutler are finally all getting on the same page.

Charles Rangel Should Be Censured, House Ethics Committee Recommends

WASHINGTON — The House ethics committee on Thursday recommended censure for longtime Rep. Charles Rangel, suggesting that the New York Democrat suffer the embarrassment of standing before his colleagues while receiving an oral rebuke by the speaker for financial and fundraising misconduct.

Censure is the most serious congressional discipline short of expulsion. The House, which could change the recommended discipline by making it more serious or less serious, probably will consider Rangel's case after Thanksgiving.

The ethics committee voted 9-1 to recommend censure and that Rangel pay any taxes he owes on income from a vacation villa in the Dominican Republic. The five Democrats and five Republicans on the panel deliberated for about three hours behind closed doors.

In a report, the committee said that censure had been recommended in the past in cases of lawmakers enriching themselves. In Rangel's case, the committee said, its decision was based on "the cumulative nature of the violations and not any direct personal financial gain."

Earlier, at a sanctions hearing, the 20-term congressman apologized for his misconduct but said he was not a crooked politician out for personal gain. He was in the House hearing room when the ethics committee chairman, Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, announced the recommendation.

Rangel faced Lofgren after the verdict and said, "I hope you can see your way clear to indicate any action taken by me was not with the intention of bringing any disgrace on the House or enriching myself personally."

The vote against censure probably came from Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., a former member of his state's Supreme Court. He said before deliberations that he believed the facts merited a reprimand. A less serious punishment, a reprimand requires a House vote but no oral rebuke.

It's unclear how much Rangel owes in taxes. An ethics committee document indicated he owed $16,775 as of 1990, but Rangel has paid some of his back taxes.

The ethics committee's chief counsel, Blake Chisam, had recommended censure for Rangel. Chisam, responding to questions from committee members, said he personally believed that Rangel's conduct did not amount to corruption.

Rangel, 80, ended the sanctions hearing with an emotional plea to salvage his reputation. Before speaking, he sat for several minutes trying to compose himself. He placed his hands over his eyes and then his chin before he slowly stood up and said in a gravelly voice that was barely audible, "I don't know how much longer I have to live."

Facing the committee members, he asked them to "see your way clear to say, 'This member was not corrupt.'"

He continued: "There's no excuse for my behavior and no intent to go beyond what has been given to me as a salary. I apologize for any embarrassment I've caused you individually and collectively as a member of the greatest institution in the world."

In the most dramatic clash of the proceeding, Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, questioned the assertion of Rangel – the former chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee – that he wasn't corrupt.

"Failure to pay taxes for 17 years. What is that?" McCaul asked, referring to Rangel's shortchanging the Internal Revenue Service on rental income from his villa in the Dominican Republic.

McCaul also noted the committee's finding that Rangel solicited donors for the Charles B. Rangel Center at City College of New York from donors who had business before the Ways and Means Committee.

After an investigation that began in summer 2008, Rangel was convicted Tuesday by a jury of his House peers on 11 of 13 charges of rules violations.

He was found to have improperly used official resources – congressional letterheads and staff – to raise funds from businesses and foundations for the Rangel Center. A brochure with some of Rangel's solicitation letters asked for $30 million, or $6 million a year for five years.

He also was found guilty of filing a decade's worth of misleading annual financial disclosure forms that failed to list hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets, and failure to pay taxes on his Dominican unit.

Chisam said donations to the Rangel Center were going poorly, then spiked after Rangel rose to the top of the Ways and Means Committee. He noted the center would benefit minority students and asked, "What kind of example is that of what public service ought to be?"

Chisam asked what a neighbor of Rangel would think after she was evicted from her apartment in Harlem's Lennox Terrace for violating terms of her lease – and then learning Rangel was allowed to convert a residential-only unit into a campaign office. Others were evicted for similar offenses, the committee found.

"How would that influence her faith in government?" Chisam asked.

And Chisam asked how a waitress struggling to pay her taxes on income and tips would feel about Rangel not paying taxes on rental money from his vacation villa.

Rangel brought in Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., to give a testimonial for the congressman. Lewis called his colleague "a good and decent man" and said Rangel had worked tirelessly to advance civil rights.

Before Chisam began his remarks, Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Ala., told committee colleagues that Rangel needed only to "look in the mirror to know who to blame" for his predicament.

The ethics committee's work didn't finish with the Rangel case. A hearing is scheduled Nov. 29 to consider charges that Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., improperly used her influence to get federal financial assistance for a bank in which her husband was an investor. Waters has denied the allegations and promised to mount a vigorous defense.

GM Stock price shoots up after IPO today

Just 17 months after the company’s bankruptcy, General Motors had a new initial public offering. The GM stock was offered at $33 a share, and the GM stock price has been steadily rising. The U.S. Government has sold half of its preferred stock in GM, raising about $23 billion.

The GM IPO this morning comes after a very rough road for the company. One year and five months after going into bankruptcy and receiving $50 billion from federal taxpayers, GM was able to go public again. On the New York Stock Exchange, General Motors (stock symbol GM), was offered at $33. The CEO of GM got to open the trading day at the NYSE, ringing the opening bell with a 2011 Camaro SS horn blast.

Right after opening, the GM stock price rose to about $35. Depending on how today goes, this could very well be the largest initial public offering in the history of the New York Stock Exchange. GM originally planned on offering only about $20.1 billion worth of stock today. However, there is a possibility that the size of the initial public offering of GM stock could be expanded by as much as $3 billion. If the GM IPO reaches $23.1 billion in value, it will break the record set in July by the Agricultural Bank of China.
Will GM IPO benefit taxpayers?

The U.S. Treasury has chosen to sell half of its stake in the company. At $33 a share, the GM stock raised about $23 billion for the Treasury. While not quite half of the investment taxpayers made in the company, it is a start. The government would have to sell the remaining half of its stock at $53 per share in order to make up the rest of the investment. Only about 5 percent of the shares are actually being sold to “regular Joe” investors, which is standard for most initial public offerings.

Unemployment Extension Update 11/17/10: Unemployment extension legislation has been introduced in the House. The legislation, if passed, would extend the deadline for filing for federal extended unemployment benefits to February 28. However, extended benefits legislation will need to be passed in both the House and Senate, which may be difficult, prior to approval. The current extended benefits expire on November 30.

Unemployment Extension Update 11/11/10: Legislation that provides an extension of federal extended unemployment benefits through November expires at the end of the month. Unless another extension is passed there will be no extended benefits programs in place, except in some cases where those already collecting unemployment can move to the next tier of benefits.

The current unemployment extensions in place expire on November 30. Unless another extension is passed there will be no extended benefits programs in place, over 2 million unemployed workers will lose extended unemployment benefits, and the only unemployment insurance available will be basic unemployment benefits.

Now we’re getting our first look at the woman who helped tear the couple apart.

According to an Access Hollywood source, The Other Woman/aka Mistress/aka Sideline Ho is allegedly Erin Barry, the wife of former NBA player Brent Barry — who just happens to be one of Tony’s ex-teammates. The guys hooped together on the San Antonio Spurs between 2004 – 2008.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Brent — who now works as a sports analyst for NBA TV — filed for divorce from Erin on Oct. 29. Coinkydink? We think not. When entertainment journalist Billy Bush quizzed Barry on the nature of her relationship with Parker this afternoon, the leggy blonde burst into tears and replied “No Comment.”

The Desperate Housewives star filed divorce papers in Los Angeles Superior Court today – a day after her publicist denied reports that Tony had filed for divorce in Texas. Us Magazine reports that the split came after Eva, 35, discovered Tony, 28, was having an affair with Barry — a mutual friend of the couple — who he was allegedly texting “hundreds of times a month for almost a year.” Tony also reportedly cheated on Eva with yet another woman just a few years ago. He kept in touch with that lass via Facebook.

Eva was “heartbroken by the betrayal” upon learning of her husband’s most recent indiscretion, an insider tells Us.

The actress began dating the French-born Parker in Jan. 2005. They announced their engagement in Nov. 2006 and married a year later in a lavish wedding ceremony in a castle on the outskirts of Paris.

GM’s IPO: Where’s The Weevil In The Hardtack? – The New American

Steven Rattner, former counselor to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, celebrated in Huffington Post, “In the end, it was a blow out!” With the old General Motors successfully selling shares in its new General Motors at $33 per share, taxpayers will allegedly be getting back part of the $50 billion in bailout money used to rescue the company 17 months ago.

As Rattner exulted:

The mother of all initial public offerings — that of the refreshed, revitalized and revamped General Motors — went off better than almost anyone expected….

Note the key lessons of the GM adventure: First, the availability of $82 billion from the now reviled Troubled Assets Relief Program was essential. Our ever hapless Congress would never have acted in [such] a timely way. The existence of TARP saved our auto industry, our banking system and derivatively, our entire economy.

The U.S. Treasury sold nearly 500 million of its common and preferred shares in the company, returning about $23 billion back to the government, and bringing its interest in the company down from 61 percent to 33 percent. The United Auto Workers healthcare trust, which owned another 20 percent of the company, also sold some of its interest in the company, reducing its stake to just over 13 percent.

President Obama also expressed his delight: “General Motors’ initial public offering marks a major milestone in the turnaround of not just an iconic company but the entire American auto industry. Through [this] IPO, the government will cut its stake in GM by nearly half, continuing our disciplined commitment to exit this investment while protecting the American taxpayer.” Treasury Secretary Geithner added, “It is now widely recognized that the taxpayers’ investment not only helped save jobs during the worst economic crisis in a generation but also gave the auto industry a solid foundation on which to build.”

The Center for Automotive Research announced that, with the bailout of the automotive industry, the government avoided a loss of $28 billion and saved nearly 1 ½ million jobs. Kristin Dziczek, director of the research group, said, “The loss would have been caused by increased public welfare payments and lost tax revenues from workers had the government not provided [that] $82 billion of assistance to the industry.” She added, “You could argue that because the auto industry is one of the most productive and integrated industries, putting the money there was a better place to put it than job creation in any other sector.”

Joann Muller wrote in Forbes that part of the reason for the success of the offering of shares in the new company was because it has a much more competitive cost structure and a “clean balance sheet,” and is building better cars. Although it has shed several of its brands, now offering only Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC models, it has posted three consecutive profitable quarters and may just show a profit for the full year, the first time since 2004.

For the skeptics, however, much was left unreported. In order for the taxpayer to come out even on the bailout, the share price of GM stock would have to rise to more than $50. This admittedly is going to be a long row to hoe, especially in an economy mired in the Great Recession. And the quality of GM’s cars is still well behind those of Ford and Toyota. And while GM is showing profits in the United States and in some foreign countries, they are still losing $2 billion annually in Europe.

And let’s not forget about the original owners of the old General Motors, whose stock is essentially worthless, and whose bonds took steep discounts from face value during the bankruptcy. And even to use the word bankruptcy isn’t accurate; takeover is more precise. At no time did the real owners of the company participate in the restructuring which, as will be recalled, transferred 20 percent of the company to the UAW at essentially no cost to them.

Other concerns haven’t been addressed, either. Where is that money from the offering going? Is it going to reduce the federal deficit? Not a chance. The Fed has just stepped to the plate to keep the government going for another six months with its additional massive ongoing inevitable and eternal bailout called QE2. And who is running the company? Management appears at the moment to be doing an excellent job if all reports are to be believed. But the federal government still owns a third of the company and its union owns one-eighth. What is likely to happen during union negotiations? Would that union ownership ever be used for blackmail purposes? Heaven forbid it! And would the kleptomaniac government planners ever totally leave GM alone? Not likely. And just who arranged for the IPO? Would that be the insider bankers that profited from the economic meltdown? Would that be Morgan Stanley, JP MorganChase, Bank of America, Citigroup? Of course it would. Their “commission?” The Times reported that their fee would be just 0.75 percent, “low by bankers’ standards.” That’s $172 million.

Finally, what is firmly cemented in place now is the expectation that the U.S. taxpayer will always be “on the hook” during future “recessions,” difficulties, and financial crises.

In sum, then, things haven’t really changed all that much. The company isn’t free to compete as well as it could, it will suffer from tarnish on its reputation for years to come, it will still operate under heavy government and union influence, and the taxpayer, in light of the precedent set by the bailouts, will never get out whole. And the bankers…

The Committee’s still deliberating as I write this, but what other sentence could they possibly impose? They have three choices. One is reprimand, a.k.a. light wrist-slap, which would be absurd even by normal House ethics standards given that they’ve convicted him of fully 11 violations. Another is expulsion, which ain’t happening. So it’s censure, a.k.a. hard wrist-slap, by default. Under slightly different circumstances, that sentence actually would have stung a bit. As it is, it’s purely symbolic:

Blake Chisam, the ethics-committee lawyer who is serving as prosecutor for Mr. Rangel’s disciplinary proceedings, told the panel that the senior New York Democrat’s conduct “demonstrated a lack of attention and carelessness over a broad range of issues over a lengthy period of time” and that the punishment of censure was appropriate.

Mr. Rangel had been expected to face either a censure or a reprimand. Both involve a vote on the House floor condemning the lawmaker’s conduct, but censure is the more severe punishment. In Mr. Rangel’s case, the difference is entirely symbolic: Censure includes a ban from serving as the ranking party member on a committee, but Mr. Rangel effectively relinquished that in March when he was forced to give up his chairmanship of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

In fact, Chisam later said that the violations didn’t quite rise to the level of censure under previous precedent, which I guess means this warrants an in-between wrist slap But look on the bright side: Even if Rangel hadn’t stepped down as Ways and Means chair and was stripped of his title today, he would have lost it anyway six weeks from now when the new GOP Congress is sworn in. As such, today’s hearing was simply an opportunity to shame him publicly — which, as you’ll see below, GOP Rep. Jo Bonner used to full advantage. Exit question: I understand the value of having John Lewis appear on your behalf as a character witness, but how effective can anyone be on that score when they open by admitting that they don’t know the facts of the case?

Update: No surprise — the Committee’s recommended censure. Now it’s on to the House floor vote for the ceremonial slapping o’ the wrist.

The annual Leonid meteor shower happens tonight, November 17th through the 18th. With 15 to 20 an hour, you'll be able to see a meteor streak across the sky every few minutes, though Discovery Magazine puts it at more like 20 to 30 an hour.

The best time to observe should be after midnight, when the earth is facing the incoming bits of gravel. No telescope needed, just a space far away from light pollution where you have a wide view of the sky, and maybe a lawn chair to keep you from getting a crick in your neck.

Unfortunately, the gibbous moon will be bright this year. If you're really intent on having the best view, stay up until the wee hours of the morning, when the moon sets and allows the sky to darken, around 5:15 am. The Washington Post report that the sky will be dark enough for a good show by 3 am.

The Leonid shower happens every year in November. This year's shower will be relatively tame, since Earth will be passing through a less crowded area of debris from the comet Temple-Tuttle. Previous showers showcased hundreds or thousands of meteors an hour.

PORTLAND, Ore. - For the third time in four years, Greg Oden's knees have betrayed him.

The Portland Trail Blazers hastily called a press conference Wednesday night to announce that Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft, will miss the season after he has microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Oden's rookie year was postponed because of similar surgery on his right knee, and last season he broke his left kneecap early in December and again required surgery.

He was still rehabbing when the latest problem was discovered.

"As you can expect, this young man is devastated about not having the opportunity to play this season, being so close to getting back on the floor and just all of a sudden, this situation comes up and it's like, here we go again for him," Portland coach Nate McMillan said.

Oden's latest surgery is scheduled for Friday in Vail, Colo. The microfracture procedure will repair damaged cartilage that is not related to the kneecap injury, the team said.

Blazers trainer Jay Jensen said the latest problem with Oden's knee became apparent about two weeks ago when he experienced some pain and fluid in the joint. Soon thereafter, an MRI revealed the damage.

"We sat there and it was like we'd been kicked in the stomach," Jensen said, choking up. "It felt like hearing someone close to us had died."

The 22-year-old Oden has often has been compared to former Portland center Sam Bowie, whom the Blazers famously selected in front of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft. The Blazers picked Oden instead of Kevin Durant, who went to the Oklahoma City franchise and has blossomed into one of the NBA's best players.

Another Portland big man, Bill Walton, was selected by the Blazers with the No. 1 pick in the 1974 draft, but he was dogged by a broken nose, foot, wrist and leg over his first two seasons before helping the team to the NBA championship in 1977.

Oden has seemingly been cursed since shortly before his rookie season, when trouble in his right knee prompted surgery the first time.

He showed promise the next season when he played in 61 games, averaging 8.9 points and seven rebounds.

But he really began to blossom last season when he became a starter and was averaging 11.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in that role. Then he was hurt in a game against Houston, crashing to the floor with his kneecap visibly contorted.

Oden had just started easing into practices when the latest knee issue was discovered. He has played in only 82 games during his NBA career, missing 176.

Jensen said it was unclear what caused the latest damage.

The Blazers announced last month they would not offer Oden a contract extension. He was the first No. 1 pick since Kwame Brown not to get one at the end of his rookie contract.

Oden will be a restricted free agent next summer and Portland will be able to match any offers for him.

Portland's problems at center are not limited to Oden.

For the past several years the Blazers have relied on veteran Joel Przybilla, but he also was injured last December and required knee surgery. The Blazers have since started veteran forward Marcus Camby in the middle.

At the start of this season, Jeff Pendergraph, who was backing up Camby, injured his knee and required season-ending surgery. The Blazers signed six-year veteran Fabricio Oberto, but he retired from the NBA just five games into the season because of a preexisting heart condition.

The good news for the Blazers is that Przybilla already has returned to practice and has said he expects to be back by Thanksgiving.

About an hour before announcing Oden's surgery, the Blazers said All-Star guard Brandon Roy would miss the next two games because of a sore left knee.

Roy recently underwent an MRI exam and team doctors determined there is no immediate need for surgery. He will be evaluated again next week.

The team's top scorer left the Blazers' game at New Orleans on Saturday with a pronounced limp after playing 22 minutes. He had recently expressed concern about his knees after playing significant minutes early in the season.

The Blazers host Denver on Thursday and Utah on Saturday.

They were somewhat overshadowed by the conference foe St. Mary’s that made the Sweet 16 in the Big Dance last season while Gonzaga only has he done for the second round. However, the Bulldogs might be better this season and they are favorites to win their 11th straight WCC title.
The Zags return 4 starters, but the one they lost is a great PG in Matt Bouldin, who was the WCC player of the year. Gonzaga’s head coach Mark Few said recently, “It will be difficult because we ran everything by Matt (Bouldin). We probably are more of a team inside out. ”
F Elias Harris (14.9 ppg 7.1 rpg last season) is the first candidate to win the conference player of the year this season and is a very athletic player and will probably be a difficult choice of first round NBA when he left school.
The Bulldogs also return G Steven Gray (13 ppg last season) and 7-foot C Robert Sacre (10.3 points per game 5.4 rebounds per game), and these guys with Harris gave the Zags a formidable trio who can score from inside and outside. Coronation is about to become one of the best big men in the country and the score may Gray, but he was inconsistent in its long-range shooting last season and will find its range for the Bulldogs to go far in the big dance. Both Gray and Harris have been selected to the list of pre-season wooden top 50 players in the nation.
The fourth starter is returning Demetri Goodson (6.4 ppg last season), which is an outsourcer perfect for the Zags, as it is a great defensive player who does not seek a lot of shots. It’s a good thing, because it is not a good outside shooter.
Even those who return the key guy this season may be juco transfer Marquise Carter, who takes over the position for Bouldin PG. Carter will be counted to produce right away, especially the distribution of the ball to the trio above. It will also be helped by real rookie David Stockton, who is the son of another decent Gonzaga PG John Stockton.
The Bulldogs are deep inside this season, not only with Harris and the Sacred, but with more contributions from 7-footer Kelly Olynyk and 6’9 “redshirt rookie Sat Dower. However, a major weakness of the Bulldogs Last season was their 3-point shooting. If they fight again shooting teams will stack deep inside to stop the big men to dominate the paint. Last season, the Bulldogs shot only 35.3% beyond the 3-pt arc and they shot 66.4% from the foul line. Shooting charity band may be even worse this season since he left and Bouldin was the best free-throw shooter this season last.
Gonzaga is stacked and they play a very unselfish type of basketball. The MLS is a big issue, but Carter has the skills and Stockton has the pedigree.
The Bulldogs play a schedule of the season very difficult at first to face three teams ranked in the top 25 in the State of Kansas # 3, # 16 Illinois and # 14 Baylor and difficult tests at Notre Dame Xavier, Oklahoma State, Wake Forrest.
Surprising stat: Gonzaga has won 10 straight conference titles, which is the longest active sequence in the nation.
Strengths: Depth, team play, the size and number of marking options.
Weaknesses: 3-point shooting, free throws, a situation unknown PG.
Big Dance? Certainly

Country music star Julianne Hough has finally confessed she's dating Ryan Seacrest after heaping praise on the "phenomenal" and "romantic" star on TV.

The beauty sparked rumors she is the American Idol host's girlfriend earlier this year after they were spotted kissing in public. She repeatedly denied there was any romance involved, insisting their relationship was purely platonic. However, the rumors refused to go away and the gossip reached fever pitch after she reportedly moved into Seacrest's Los Angeles mansion in July.

Now, Hough has gone public with her love for the star and gushed about her beau in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres.

She tells the TV host, "Oh my gosh. He's phenomenal. He's really romantic. He's not even in town and I got in my car and there are flowers everywhere. Rest in peace Ronni Chasen, Hollywood publicist to the stars. Chasen started her own public relations firm, Chasen & Company, after years of working for PR firm Rogers & Cowan. Chasen worked on such films as the classic Driving Miss Daisy and the ever popular Lolita. Her biggest representation was as a publicist for movies of the Academy Awards. Currently, Chasen was promoting Michael Douglas for Best Supporting Actor for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in addition to Alice In Wonderland 3D for Best Picture.

It all happened on Tuesday November 16th, 2010 while Chasen was driving her Mercedes-Benz. Around 12:30 am, it is being reported that there were gun shots heard in the Beverly Hills area. It is being said that after being shot five times, Chasen crashed her car into a light pole. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that “On November 16th 2010 at approximately 12:28 a.m. Beverly Hills police officers received info regarding shots that were heard in the area of Sunset and Whittier, shortly after a collision was reported in the same area. Units arrived and discovered a newer black Mercedes Benz E-350 involved in a solo crash to the light pole. The lone female occupant was located in the vehicle with apparent multiple gunshot wounds to her chest. Beverly Hills paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. The investigation is in the preliminary stages and no further information is available at this time. At this time there is no suspect, info or motive for this crime.”

It was after the incident that police were called to the scene and Chasen was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and soon after was pronounced dead.

For years, the definition of being under the radar is to be a team in the Big East other than Connecticut. It's tough to get noticed when one team is winning seven national titles, and running up winning streaks into the 50-game plateau and beyond, and rolling up one league title after another.

However, this might (emphasis on might) be the year for some other school to carry the conference banner, given UConn's heavy graduation losses and the preseason injury to point guard Caroline Doty.

Toward the top of that list is Georgetown. Led by dynamic freshman guard Sugar Rodgers, the Hoyas emerged last season from years of relative obscurity to land in a tie for second in the league and garner a first-round NCAA tournament win.

All of a sudden, the Hoyas, ranked in the top 15 in most national preseason polls, have landed into a spot of prominence on most observers' lists.

"I can remember last season saying the secret is going to get out," said Georgetown senior Monica McNutt to a conference reporter at the Big East's Media Day last month.

"Clearly, it's out at this point. With a target on our back, every game we have to bring it. We don't have time to get down and make a comeback. We know that other teams are gunning for us now.

The same warning could be sounded at West Virginia, which tied Georgetown and dropped the Big East tournament final to the Huskies, and at St. John's, though both schools have had more recent success than the Hoyas.

The Red Storm emerged from the pack with the school's first 25-win season in 26 years, combined with their best conference performance in a quarter-century. St John's, which loses only one starter, has a potential star in junior Da'Shena Stevens and should make noise nationally, provided they get past their heartbreaking overtime loss in last year's NCAA second round game at Florida State.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers used a stingy defense and an unbeaten home record to snag a No. 3 NCAA tournament seed. Liz Repella and Sarah Miles – the Big East's top defender last year – return to anchor the West Virginia backcourt.

Notre Dame and DePaul should return to the NCAA tournament and Rutgers, Louisville and an improving Marquette team should also get March Madness invitations.

With all that said, the big bad Huskies aren't going anywhere. Yes, their front line has been depleted with the graduation of Tina Charles. And an offseason knee injury to Doty leaves UConn without an experienced player to run the offense.

However, the fact that Connecticut has the nation's best player, senior Maya Moore, and the rest of the Big East doesn't – to paraphrase coach Geno Auriemma – only means that while other teams may get on the radar, the Huskies still figure to make the biggest blip.

The Favorite:
Connecticut – Losing the National Player of the Year, center Tina Charles, is a big blow, and the Huskies' inexperience up front and at point will hurt. But having Moore, the once and future National Player of the Year, means Connecticut, which has won its last 39 Big East games, won't be far from the top at any point in the season.

The Contenders:
Georgetown -- Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy has built an emerging power and Rogers' explosiveness makes her a potential national Player of the Year. The Hoyas face a big early test against Maryland at home that may say a lot about their season.

West Virginia – With the league's best young post player, sophomore Asya Bussie, and a solid senior perimeter trio of Repella, Miles and Korinne Campbell, the Mountaineers look ready to make a decent run in March.

The Darkhorse:
St. John's – The Red Storm aren't a particularly tall bunch, but coach Kim Barnes Arico returns four starters to a youthful squad that should be primed to move further in the league standings and in postseason.

College basket ball star, Brittney Griner, is likely to be ejected from playing it seems after punching an opposing team player straight in the face! We have excellent video footage of the scene, so be sure to check it out below.

Brittney Griner plays, or should I say played – past tense, for the Baylor’s. According to the Associated Press, “Baylor was up 55-39 when Barncastle fouled Griner while guarding her under the Lady Bears basket”.

Fortunately, losing their key player didn’t mean it was the end for the Baylor’s who ended up taking home a win of 69-60 against the Lady Radiers.

It’s clear that Brittney Griner wasn’t all too happy about being fouled, so sought some sought of vengence, in the form of a straight manly punch.

Her coach responded by saying that she would deal with her and that “there’s no place for that in sports”, “it was ugly for women’s basketball”.

Griner had contributed to the game on the Baylor’s side heavily, with a 21 point score.

The opposing team’s coach, Kristy Curry, said that Barncastle would be checked into hospital to determine the full extent of her injuries.
